Sample Activities for All Ages

AcTIVITY #1

Objective: To maintain a culturally rich and varied classroom environment.

Instructions for the Activity: Post pictures in your different learning centers of areas around the world. Find pictures that reflect the vistas, the buildings, the foliage, the weather. Use pictures of castles in Ireland, the beautiful water in Greece, the mountains in Switzerland, cities in the far east, the middle and the west. Talk about the similarities and the differences.  Why are they different? Everyone should have a subscription to National Geographic for Kids.

Extension: Use photos to create adventures during play. Bring the conversation back to the map so children get a reference of where the countries are.


Activity #2

Objective :  To make the children aware of the fragility of the earth and the part we play in keeping it healthy.

Learning Domain:  Social/Emotional

Instructions for the Activity:  Have the children go outside with brown bags and collect stones, twigs, leaves, acorns.  Have them look for litter and if wearing plastic gloves pick it up and make a garbage bags. Throw the garbage away and have them create a collage out of the items collected.  Bring nature into the classroom.  Use the material collected to start a discussion about how trees grow, what they need to be healthy and strong, what the garbage does to hurt our environment.  Become “activists”, make signs to put in park around school to KEEP OUR EARTH CLEAN.


activity #3

Objective:  To develop an understanding and appreciation of languages around the world.

Instructions for the Activity: Learn how to say key words from the month’s curriculum in different languages

Extension: Read books from other countries ie., Strega Nona, Ferdinand the Bull, Abiyoyo, to engage the children in thinking and talking about what is similar and different from where we live.

Extension: Make a chart of everyday words that reflects all the languages spoken by the children and families in the classroom.

Extension: Label the chairs and tables etc. in the classroom in different languages.

Extension: Say “It is nice to eat with friends” before meals in different languages. (Ni vyema kula na marafiki in Swahili).
